Task two

Task Two

Shots I will use:

1:

What is this shot?

This is a shot from ‘eye of the wolf’ a short-were-wolf film I am currently in the process of making. In the scene I am learning that not everything is right with myself and this is the first shot from the scene.

Why have I chosen this shot?

I like the way it’s structured, with the taps right in the foreground and the blends if blues in the background. I also think it represents my eye in cinematography as it is a very interesting shot, it sets the scene with the acting as well: guy turns on a tap and puts his hands on the side of the sink and grips hard, telling the audience that something is wrong.

What does this shot demonstrate?

This shot shows represents my eye for shot ideas, a bit of background on this scene, I was just watching teen wolf and though ‘how cool would it be to make a were-wolf film and without any planning or script and this shot demonstrates my ability to improvise, which is a key skill in this industry and showing this in the show reel is a prime example of my ability to do just that.

2:

This shot is from the Advert project I did. In the shot Kane is viewing an alternate version of himself that bought Cannon Bitez (the product I had to sell) and there is a floating cannonball telling him why he should buy the product. Because I think it’s a visually interesting shot, everything else is in colour but The Normal version of Kane isn’t which shows a creative mind and the fact I managed to pass it off shows integrity and patience and the floating cannonball shows this as well. This shot demonstrates my “skill” in editing and my creative approach to a project. I think that with this shot people will be able to see my creative side and my imagination, and go “oh I wouldn’t’ve thought to do that.”

3:

This is a shot from the 1-scene-project we had to do last year: hindsight. In this shot the antagonist is telling the protagonist what’s happening. In this shot we learn that they have met each other before however the protagonist doesn’t know how or cannot remember how. I like the balance of light and dark in this shot, it represents that he is a good-guy turned bad, which will be information provided to the audience later in the scene. I also like the angle used, it shows that this person is the one in power as we are looking up towards him, which also shows my skills approach to the cinematographic side of film-making. This shot shows that I can use light and dark in a scene to give the feeling and impression that I want. It also shows that I can use angles to give the sense of who’s in charge in a scene.

4:

This is the Newsreel scene from The ‘Fatum’ case, I chose this because it’s the first shot in the film and it looks professional and looks like what an actual news channel would: with the weather and scrolling headlines. I chose this shot because I enjoyed making all the features, such as the objects in the foreground, which was primarily made in photoshop except for the scrolling text and the rotating Earth in the background. I enjoyed the end result and being able to be creative on the project. This demonstrates my creative capabilities and my editing knowledge, which expanded when doing this shot, which was the most complex shot of the film as it required the most work.

5:

This is from the eye of the wolf, the scene where I transform into my version of a were-wolf, which has red eyes, grey skin and red teeth. In the film I plan to make it that were-wolfs were derived from the creatures known as Worons, which howled and possessed people who had murdered another person, in this case they have returned and intend to spread fear. I chose this shot because I like the structure of the image, with me in the centre of the shot. And it is the most visually interesting. The shot also took several days to finish as I had to mask the arms and head and make the eyes and mouth red, then add the howling sound. It is a shot I am immensely proud of and I think that is what you should have in your show reel, things you are proud of. It demonstrates my editing, directing, acting and camera work skills. It also demonstrates a new take on the were-wolf genre of film as when you see this you don’t think “oh that looks like a wolf” you think “that’s strange” because you don’t understand what it is which would make you want to view the actual film.

6:

Another eye of the wolf shot, you see my eye change from blue to red. This shot indicates that something is not quite right with my character. I chose this shot because I like the way it transitions from blue to red in the blinking method, which I think is a very professional decision, I also like the way it transitioned form normal speed to slow motion in the scene, to let the information that ‘something isn’t right’ sink in.This shot demonstrates my editing capabilities and how I go about putting a shot together and how I would make it interesting.

7:

This shot is from the ‘Fatum’ Case, also from the newsreel scene, when Fatum addresses the world and tells them to fear him. I chose this shot because I like the effects I used to make the shot more glitched out. I think it makes it more visually interesting, I also liked the fact I added a black and white filter to Fatum as it gives a more menacing tone to the character. This shot demonstrates, once again, my creative approach and my editing capabilities as I made this shot unique to the others in the film

8:

This is a shot of a fire-pillar in the Garrison Pub in Barnsley. I took the shot solely because of the show reel and thought it might make people see the creative eye I have. I chose this shot for my show reel because I like the angle of the fire-pillar, and the darkness around it, besides the three lights on the ceiling, make it stand out and really draws you eye towards the fire. This shot demonstrates my ability to see possible shots in the ordinary and everyday things. As I was just at the pub with my friends when I took this shot.

9:

This is another shot from the Fatum case, where Gareth is searching this area for clues as to where the masked FATUM sends him a sinister text message. I chose this shot for the depth of the shot, with the smaller object looking bigger and the larger object further away, it is another shot I am immensely proud of in the film. This shot demonstrates my creative planning as I really enjoyed drawing this on the storyboard, however certain factors had to change as we had a change of setting compared to the storyboard so it could also be another demonstration of my improvisation skills.

10:

This is a shot from a lightsaber video me and my brother did for his YouTube channel, this was one of the only shots that were recovered, most were lost during editing and the others didn’t have the lightsabers. I chose this shot because it took me ages to edit as the programme requires each frame to be analysed at a 30-fps rate, and there were approximately 5 seconds so around 150 frames to be edited so it took almost all day because After Effects kept shutting down and deleting the progress, even though I’d saved after each 5 frames, I am proud of this shot. This shot demonstrates my ability to be patient in my work. And my skill in editing, both VFX and Sound.

11:
This is from the chase scene in the Fatum case. I chose this shot because I like the angle of the shot, it works well with the scene and I’d say it’s a more professional-looking shot. This shot demonstrates my ability to plan shots and my thought process in planning as the only thing I had on the script was FATUM is chased by Gareth and Leon, so it also shows once again my ability to improvise under certain conditions.

12:
This is a shot from the music project we did. The song was pump up the Jam and in this shot the two actors are simply dancing to the music. The reason I like this shot is because of the colours I used, it’s both unique and very out-there for the time period and I think it worked well with the music, as it’s a disco song and discos normally have flashing lights so it seemed more sensible to have a variety of colours in the video. This shot demonstrates my editing ability and my eye for possible techniques I could use for certain shots.

13:

This is a shot from the Cannon Bitez advert I did, it is the final shot from the advert. I chose this shot because I like the way the camera moves down with Kane and then out. It demonstrates my ability to get professional shots done, and once again my eye for possible shots.

14:

This is another shot from Hindsight where Dan’s character is clueing as to how they know each other. I chose this shot because I like the camera movement in this shot: it moves with his character, and as he gets slowly closer to the camera it could be shown as a reference to Ryan’s character getting closer to Dan’s identity. This shot demonstrates patience as it took around 7 takes to get right and we only had an hour to get it done. It also, once again, shows my eye for shots.

15:

This is another shot from the Fatum case, in which Gareth and FATUM have a fight scene. I like the transitions from full speed to slow motion and the match-on-action shot I used. This shot both demonstrates my editing ability and again my ability to improvise with limited foundations as again I had nothing for this fight scene apart from the storyboard, which I drew up from nothing.

16:
This is another shot from the pump up the jam music video, once again the actors are dancing to the music. I chose this shot because I like the echo effect I added (by mistake) and thought it would be another good example of my editing skills It once again demonstrates my ability in editing videos to make them more interesting and relevant of the time.

17:

This is also from the FATUM case chase scene. My character has just been stabbed and Gareth is wanting revenge on FATUM. I chose this shot because I like the muzzle flash on the gun, it was the first proper time I used an effect and to be honest it wasn’t that good so I thought maybe I could use this to show how I’ve progressed into more ambitious things. This is a demonstration of my progress in editing, the muzzle flash doesn’t look that good so it’s good to see how I’ve improved.

18:
In this shot Ryan’s character is nervous as Dan’s character isn’t as a scared of him as he used to be. I chose this shot because I like the use of the shot’s contrasts with what’s happening in the shot, the extreme-close-up is used to do just that. This shot demonstrates my knowledge of what shots are used for and experimenting with different shots can be seen through this shot.

19:

This is a shot in my transformation scene where my skin turns grey. I chose this shot because I like the editing technique I used, I just added a faded black and white filtered mask onto the arm. This shot again demonstrates my patience in a project, with having to change the mask every frame, with large/dramatic movements.

20:

This is the shot where we first see cannon ‘cannon head’ come out of the packet. I chose this shot because I like the way I had the character-moving floating forward then gliding past his face. This shot demonstrates my attention to detail when editing as I realised that the character needed to come out of the packet believable and to do that I masked the from and forward-facing side of the packet so it looked like it was in the packet to begin with.

21:

This is another Pump-Up-The-Jam shot. I chose this shot because even though it’s obviously a green screen it’s still interesting to look at, which answers the question of what it demonstrates: my ability to make the make the viewer remain interested even though the facts are staring them in the face.

22:
This is the inspection shot from the FATUM case where Gareth looks over the most recent victim. I chose this shot because I thought it was an interesting angle and liked the way the characters are in shadows and the grass and sky are the brighter parts of the shot. It demonstrates my ability to think of interesting possible shots for different scenarios.

23:
This is the shot from the advert project where Cannon-Head tells Kane why he should buy Cannon Bitez. I chose this shot because I like the way the mouth is animate and I am proud with how it turned out. It demonstrates my ability to animate, even thought that is not what I specialize in.

24:
This is from the final scene of the FATUM case. I chose this shot because I like the way the camera looks down at my dad’s character, which makes the audience look down on his character. It demonstrates my ability to manipulate the audience.

Shots 25-27 and 34 are shots from the globe charity event, I chose these because I like the angles I chose or the location I took the photos to give them more of an effect. They each demonstrate my eye for possible shots. Shot 34 I’m probably going to use as an ending shot.

25:

26:

27:

Shots 28-33 are practice shots I took in college and at the Garrison pub in Barnsley. I chose them again because I like the angles (more specified details on certain shots if required). Each of them, again, show my eye for possible shots even for something as basic as a practice shot.

28:

28:

I wanted to make the shot more interesting so I added the phone, which demonstrates my improvisation skills.

29:

30:

I like the way the camera moves along with the lift.

31:

32:

33:

I like P.O.V. shots, it makes me feel like I’m actually there which is what the shot is used for.

34:
